DM5445 Frequently Asked Questions

Starting OneTouch - Click to enlarge image

You have numerous options to begin scanning. Perhaps the easiest is to use Visioneer's OneTouch software that comes free with each scanner. OneTouch runs a service on your computer to detect when a Xerox scanner has been connected and powered on. Once a scanner is detected, the OneTouch service automatically launches the OneTouch scanning software. You can open, and begin using your OneTouch software, by clicking on the OneTouch Icon in your Task Tray. Note that, depending on your desktop settings, it may be in the hidden icon section which can be accessed by the up arrow in the task tray. If it is hidden you can drag and drop it to the main task tray if desired.

If you right click the OT icon there is a quick reference guide to help get you started. Once you begin using the software there is a comprehensive help file to answer most common questions on how to use OneTouch.

PaperPort iconPaperPort from Start Menu - Click to enlarge imageIf your scanner came with the PaperPort software and you chose to have it installed, you can launch the software from the Start Menu or by double clicking the PaperPort Icon on your desktop.

When PaperPort opens, you can use the Setup Wizard to select your scanner or manually select your scanner by following these steps:

1. Click the Scan Settings Icon

2. Click the Select... Button

3. Selecting the scanner's TWAIN driver in the list of available drivers and clicking OK. You can begin scanning by using the Scan Now icon on the far left of the Menu Bar.

PaperPort also gives you the option to hide or display the scanner's TWAIN driver interface each time you initiate a scan session. This can be a useful option if you do not need to change scan settings very often.

Your scanner's rollers may need to be cleaned. We recommend a cleaning every 7,000-15,000 scans but this could vary depending on the originals. During use, the rollers on your scanner build up dirt, ink and other compounds that could cause them to become overly smooth and/or alter their diameter. This can lead to mis-feeds, jamming and heavy skewing of the pages as the travel through the scanner. So long as the rollers themselves are not worn, a good cleaning can resolve many paper handling issues. The best way to clean the rollers is to use a properly treated alcohol pad to wipe them clean. Please refer to your manual for instructions on cleaning your scanner. If a cleaning does not solve the problem please contact our technical support department for further help.

Note: If you are scanning a large amount of carbonless paper (two-copy forms which allow pressure on the top form to carry through to the bottom form) your scanner will need a more frequent and more in-depth cleaning. Cleaning carbonless-paper residue (dry-ink particles) requires specialized cleaning instructions. Please contact our technical support group for help.

Device Settings tab - Click to enlarge imageYes, your scanner maintains three counters. Two of these counters can be reset (like a trip meter) and one which cannot (like an odometer). The counters can be used to track scans between roller cleaning and replacements. There are multiple ways to access these counters. One way is from the scanner's Device settings tab. This tab can be accessed by right clicking on the scanner's icon in the Windows Device Page and selecting Scan properties from the menu.

You can also find this information in the scanner's TWAIN driver User Interface Window.

Make sure to enable the Advanced View in the driver window by selecting in in the Basic/Advanced drop down found in the upper right corner of the Scan Settings Window. Next, make sure to select the DM5445 tab in the Driver Configuration settings (Wrench and Gear icon).

Yes. When using our DriverPLUS TWAIN driver or the Visioneer OneTouch software you can enable what we call Job Building by turning on Manual feed mode.

Scan Configuration Window Page Settings Tab - Click to enlarge imageIf you are using OneTouch to scan then you will need to enable the Manual Feed in the OneTouch Scan Configuration Window under the Page Settings tab. The timeout is the amount of time the scanner will wait for additional paper to be scanned from the ADF before completing the scan job.

If you are not using OneTouch to scan then this needs to be set in the scanner's TWAIN Driver User interface. It can be enabled as shown below. As with OneTouch, the timeout is the amount of time the scanner will wait for additional paper to be scanned from the ADF before completing the scan job. If you want to force the scan session to complete before the timer runs out simply press the Abort button.

Yes the DM5445 has a manual feed lever that disengages the separation roller. The separation roller can often it make it difficult to feed fragile or non-standard type documents. When the separation roller is disengaged paper should be fed a page at a time.

The lever can be found on the front side of the scanner's paper path. It is a white latch located around the aqua colored roller housing.
