Important Notes

When scanning a business card, medical card, credit card, etc. on your DocuMate 162, we recommend that you place the card horizontally, not vertically, into the automatic document feeder (ADF) of the scanner.

Attention Microsoft Windows Vista users:

By default, Windows Vista has User Account Control (UAC) turned on. When you install software, UAC may display a window informing you that "an unidentified program wants access to your computer". If this window is displayed during installation of any software that comes with your scanner, click "Allow: I trust this program. I know where it's from or I've used it before" to permit the installation to continue.

The Windows Vista User Account Control (UAC) must be turned off prior to installing the Kofax VRS or Kofax Scan Demo software. The Kofax VRS installer will display a message stating "User Account Control is enabled on this machine. The VRS installer will not install correctly with this setting enabled. Please disable this setting from the User Accounts dialog in the Control Panel." The Kofax Scan Demo installer will display a message stating "Cannot find IC runtime. Install IC." Turn off the Vista UAC to complete the installation of these two software applications. You can turn UAC back on after the installation has completed.

Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 may fail during its installation with an error similar to "Temp folder is inaccessible". This is a problem with the Adobe installer. You can install Adobe Acrobat Reader 8 by:

As described in the Quick Start poster and the User's Guide, upon successful installation of the scanner driver software, you should see a screen illustrating how to hook up your scanner to your computer. If you do not see this screen, you should plug your scanner in to your computer anyway. Your User's Guide contains instructions on how to attach your scanner to your computer.

Once you have plugged in your scanner, you may be notified that Windows needs to install driver software for your scanner. If so, click on "Locate and install driver software (recommended)" and follow any resulting instructions.

If you want to reinstall the scanner driver, you will need to log into the computer as a user with administrative privileges to complete an uninstall then reinstall of the scanner driver.

Attention Microsoft Windows XP users:

If you check your scanner's hardware properties from the Windows XP Control Panel set to Classic view, you may receive an error message "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." This is a known issue on Windows XP and simply requires a reboot of your computer. You should check your scanner properties by right-clicking on the One Touch icon and choosing "Show Hardware" or from the Windows XP Control Panel when it is set to the Category view.

Attention Microsoft Windows 2000 users:

If you are prompted to reboot during installation, please select "No". Finish installing the rest of the software, then close all open windows and reboot your computer.

NOTE: Your scanner cannot be used with the “Fast User Switching” feature available with Windows XP and Windows Vista. Only the first person logged into the computer can use the scanner, if you Fast User Switch to another user name the scanner will not operate for the second user. The first user must log out of Windows, and then a different user can log in to use the scanner.

Q: When using "Create single image files" not all of the pages scanned are sent to the destination I chose. Where are they?

A: There are a limited number of times that an application can open. When "Create single image files" is selected and you are scanning to a destination application, each side of the page scanned will open a new instance of that application. If you want to have an image open in an application immediately, limit your scan batch to less than 5 pages.

Alternatively, you can set your destination to be a folder location on your computer or network using "Transfer to Storage". Select any file format and then scan a large batch of papers. At the end of scanning, the driver will immediately save all pages scanned to that folder location without opening an application.

Q: I have selected "Skip Blank Originals" but not all of the blank pages have been removed. Why are there still blank pages in the file?

A: If you are scanning light weight paper, such as 16lb or 18lb printer paper, the scanner may be picking up faint images through the paper and the driver will not drop those pages out of the final file. The "Skip Blank Originals" result will vary based on the DPI range and paper weight. Generally 100 dpi or 150 dpi produces the best results.

Q: Why does my scanner not function after performing a system restore on Windows XP or Windows Vista?

A: The system restore process may have corrupted some of the driver components. It is recommended that you reinstall your scanner driver. Please refer to the instructions in your scanner User's Guide Maintenance section for instructions on reinstalling your scanner driver.

Q: Why won't my scanner buttons work after scanning with Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)?

A: After performing a scan using the WIA interface you must close the application you were using before scanning with the buttons on the scanner. This does not occur when scanning using the TWAIN interface.

Q: I tried to 'Repair' the One Touch 4.0 application by using the 'Change' function through the Add/Remove Program within the Control Panel and was not able to repair it. How do I repair One Touch 4.0?

A: Before attempting to repair One Touch 4.0, unplug the USB cable connected to the scanner.

Perform the Change/Repair function again. If you are asked for the Install CD, insert Disc 1 into the CD-ROM player and click OK.

When prompted, plug the USB cable back into the scanner.

When the installation process finishes, click OK on the Complete The Installation window, and then click Close.

Reboot your computer.

Q: One Touch 4.0 no longer functions after installing Internet Explorer 7 on Windows XP. How do I resolve this issue?

A: This is a known issue where One Touch 4.0 stops responding when Internet Explorer 7 is installed after the scanner. To resolve the issue:

Open the Windows Add/Remove Programs feature from the Control Panel.

Find Windows Internet Explorer 7 and uninstall it using the change/remove options. Follow the wizard through a complete removal of the Internet Explorer 7 software.

Find One Touch 4.0 and uninstall it using the change/remove options. Follow the wizard through a complete removal of the One Touch 4.0 program.

Unplug your scanner's USB cable from the computer.

Reboot your computer.

Install Internet Explorer 7.

Install your scanner driver.

Q: I am getting an error message that OCR fails every time I try to scan using the OCR features from One Touch 4.0. What is the problem?

A: Anti-SpyWare software that is set to always run may interfere with the driver functionality. It is recommended that you temporarily disable or suspend the automatic protection feature during scanning. After scanning is complete and your file has been saved, turn the auto-protect feature back on. You do not need to close the Anti-SpyWare software.

Q: What recommendations do you have for using PaperPort?

A: PaperPort is a total document management software application. The PaperPort scanning features allows you to insert new pages into an existing file and name your file immediately after scanning. From within the PaperPort desktop you can sort your documents and move them between folders as you would through the Windows My Documents folder. You can reorder the pages in a PDF file, unstack a document so all the pages are resaved as individual files. PaperPort also has some basic image editing options in the PaperPort PageView, such as; adding notes to image files, modifying image colors, and touch up the image using the erase and/or auto-correct options.

Q: After rebooting my computer, the CD front end is automatically displayed, but when I try to install the scanner driver, I get an error message which reads,

This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to confirm that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

What do I do?

A: Exit out of the installer by pressing the "MAIN MENU" link, then the "EXIT" link. Eject the CD from your CD-ROM drive, then put it back in again; once the installer has restarted, proceed normally.

XEROX scanners are sensitive electronic devices. Static electricity can damage the components inside the scanner if precautions are not taken. Do not touch the HOST terminal on the back of the scanner with your finger or any other object while the power is on.
